QMAS™ · VERSION 1.0 · 2026

Quality Methane Avoidance Standard™

A measurable, documented and verifiable framework for the assessment of methane emission avoidance, reduction, capture and controlled destruction.

Measurable and verifiable assessment of methane mitigation

The Quality Methane Avoidance Standard™ provides a unified framework for assessing the avoidance, reduction, capture, controlled destruction and, where appropriate net GHG mitigation can be demonstrated, utilization of methane emissions.

Venting Avoidance

Avoidance of methane venting that occurs or is expected to occur under the baseline and demonstrably reduces the amount of methane entering the atmosphere.

Flaring Avoidance

Replacement of baseline flaring with an alternative solution may be recognized only where the full relevant GHG balance demonstrates net mitigation.

Capture & Destruction

Methane capture and controlled destruction may qualify as mitigation where a reduction in atmospheric methane is demonstrated.

From methane emission sources to verified mitigation

QMAS™ defines the principles and requirements for the assessment and verification of GHG mitigation projects related to methane.

  • Methane emission and venting avoidance
  • Flaring avoidance where net mitigation is demonstrated
  • Methane capture and methane destruction
  • Controlled methane flaring
  • Methane energy utilization
  • Methane mitigation in waste, wastewater, agriculture and industry
  • Reduction of methane emissions associated with mining and fossil energy production
  • Other scientifically justified and quantifiable methane mitigation

What does QMAS™ assess?

Project boundaries, the baseline, baseline and project methane emissions, captured and destroyed methane, flaring, energy utilization, associated CO₂ and other GHG emissions, leakage, uncertainty and additionality.

The objective is not the automatic recognition of a specific technology, but the assessment of the actual climate mitigation outcome achieved.

Real, measurable and environmentally integral methane mitigation

A fundamental QMAS™ requirement is that a credit represents a demonstrated climate mitigation outcome rather than merely an activity or investment.

Openness

Appropriate access to relevant project data and documentation supports independent review and verifiability.

Credibility and transparency

The baseline, project emissions, measurement data, calculations and evidence shall be documented and traceable.

Scientific foundation

High-quality, internationally recognized scientific and official data sources shall receive priority for quantification.

Conservative approach

Uncertainty shall not be handled in a way that systematically overestimates the actual methane mitigation achieved.

Environmental integrity

Projects shall not cause significant environmental or social harm that materially undermines the climate mitigation outcome.

Prevention of Double Counting

The same GHG mitigation shall not be accounted for more than once, including in projects applying multiple standards.

From baseline to QMAC™ credit

The QMAS™ assessment logic proceeds from comparison of the baseline and project conditions to net, verified methane mitigation.

1

Baseline

Determine the expected situation without the project and the relevant methane emissions.

2

Project

Document the project boundary, technology, operation and actual methane flows.

3

Methane Balance

Assess baseline and project emissions, capture, destruction, flaring and associated GHG emissions.

4

Net GHG Mitigation

Determine eligible net mitigation taking leakage, uncertainty and additionality into account.

5

Verification → QMAC™

QMAC™ may be issued ex post on the basis of the actual outcome independently verified.

QMAC™ from verified methane mitigation

Under QMAS™, the Quality Methane Avoidance Credit™, or QMAC™, represents a verified unit of eligible methane-related GHG mitigation.

QMAC™

1 tCO₂e = 1 QMAC™

One QMAC™ represents one tonne of CO₂-equivalent of eligible methane-related GHG mitigation demonstrated and verified in accordance with QMAS™.

A credit may be issued ex post only on the basis of mitigation that has actually been implemented, quantified, documented and verified.

Standard requirements and separate methodologies

The QMAS™ Standard defines requirements for quantification but does not contain detailed calculation algorithms for individual project categories or project-specific calculation models.

Detailed methodologies and calculation models may be defined in separate documents and shall be consistent with the requirements of QMAS™.

What must be quantified?

Baseline and project emissions, actual captured and destroyed methane, flaring efficiency, methane losses, associated CO₂ emissions, energy consumption, leakage and uncertainty.

  • Baseline and project
  • Methane flows
  • Destruction and flaring
  • Associated GHG emissions
  • Leakage and uncertainty
